Nova - My Role in Producing and Curating a Literary Magazine.

While working on Nova, I got to learn all about the publishing industry and great magazines like the Stinging Fly, Granta, Tolka and Folding Rock. The Nova team was split into three: Editorial, Design and Production and Marketing. I worked on the Design and Production team, but as liaison, I was able to work with each sector and help them develop while also learning about each role. While working out the ethos of our magazine we decided to utilise the inherent story elements of tarot, forging our style and voice around that. We wanted quite outré, thought-provoking and experimental stories which led to me coming up with our slogan, “Orbiting the Obscure”.

In the current landscape that is scattered with AI landmines, I ensured any art we used for the magazine was true to our identity and completely clear of artificial intelligence. I was able to outsource artists and source a site called COSMOS that allowed us use of great, public domain, ethical art. Through our marketing strategy we were also able to host successful open-mic nights that raised our submission count and our scope.
